Frequently Asked Questions

For your convenience, Bartrak has supplied the following answers to some of your most commonly asked questions about travelling in a campervan or motorhome in Australia.

In some cases, we have provided a link to an external web site for more current and accurate information.

For questions regarding rental terms and conditions, please visit Bartrak's Terms Page.

If your specific questions are not answered on this page, or on our Terms Page , please feel free to contact us with your questions via our Enquiry Page.

Do we have to stay in a caravan park or can we camp on the side of the road?

The most common place to stay is in one of the thousands of caravan parks all around Australia. Every renter of a Bartrak motorhome will receive a discount tag for use at caravan parks.

Camping overnight in "wayside stops" or "rest areas" is also very common in regional and remote areas all across Australia (local restrictions may apply in some areas). When looking for a "rest area" to camp in, look for areas that already have a few other motorhomes or caravans (other campers will make you feel more secure).

How much will we pay for a litre of fuel in Australia?

Bartrak's RV2 campervans and RV2M motorhomes use "unleaded" petrol, while our RV3 campervans, RV4, RV5 and RV6 motorhomes use diesel fuel. The cost of fuel will vary between capital cities and will generally increase as you travel into more regional or remote areas. Click here for current Unleaded petrol prices across Australia.

We have a family of 2 adults and 3 children. One child is only 10 months old. Can we travel in a 4 berth motorhome?

Unfortunately, no. By Australian road laws, every person (regardless of age) requires their own seat belt (a seat belt is required for a child seat).

The maximum number of persons permitted to travel in each vehicle is as follows,

Have we allowed enough time to travel to all of the places that we want to see ?

One common problem for first time visitors to Australia, is that they underestimate how big Australia actually is, and the time required to see all of the places that they would like to.

While planning your holiday (and before booking), we strongly recommend that you visit our new TRIP PLANNER page.

What sort of weather can we expect in Australia?

Due to the size of Australia, the weather will vary greatly depending on location. You will always find fantastic weather somewhere in Australia. The main variation in weather is from north to south. During the winter months (Jun/July/Aug) Melbourne, Adelaide's and Sydney's average temp is cooler than Brisbane or Cairns. During the summer months (Dec/Jan/Feb) temperatures are more equal, but consideration should be given to the "wet season" in the far north of Australia (Cairns/Darwin).

During the "wet season" (Dec to Mar), Cairns' and Darwin's rainfall is 8 times that of Melbourne, Sydney or Adelaide. Together with warm weather, this makes for very wet, humid and tropical conditions in the far north of Australia.
